How to Apply for Section 8 in Sarasota County

Section 8, also called the Housing Choice Voucher program, helps eligible households rent homes in the private market. In Sarasota, the first step is to check whether the Sarasota Housing Authority is taking new applications—not to apply through a rental listing site.

What to do before applications reopen

  1. 1. Start with the official applications page

    The Sarasota Housing Authority publishes waiting-list status and application information on its applications page. Check that page for an opening and follow the instructions it publishes at that time. Do not treat a third-party sign-up as a housing authority application.

  2. 2. Review the program and income limits

    The authority’s applications page also posts its 2026 income-limit table by household size. Income is only one part of eligibility; the housing authority determines whether you qualify. You can use our income eligibility checker as a planning tool, not an approval decision.

  3. 3. Keep your household information ready

    Be ready to enter accurate household, income and contact details when the authority opens applications. Follow the authority’s current instructions for any documents it requests; requirements and submission methods can change. Never send Social Security numbers or identity documents through a rental search form.

  4. 4. Apply only when the authority announces an opening

    Use the method and deadlines in the official announcement. An application or a spot on a waiting list is not a voucher. Save any confirmation the authority provides so you can check your status later.

  5. 5. If you are already on the list, keep it current

    The authority says its applicant portal is for people already on a waiting list. Existing applicants can use it to view application status, update contact information and exchange documents. The official applications page links to the portal and its waiting-list status lookup. Registering for that portal does not create a new application while the list is closed.

Already have a voucher?

You do not need to join the Sarasota waiting list just to browse homes. If your voucher comes from another housing authority and you want to move to Sarasota County, ask your current authority about portability first. The Sarasota Housing Authority has portability instructions; it says your current authority must send your paperwork and that it is currently not absorbing. Confirm the current process with both authorities before moving.
